What is Neurotalent Unlocked?

Awareness of dyslexia and other neurodiverse conditions have grown significantly in the last few years. In the workplace, more business leaders are speaking openly about their own neurodiverse conditions and organisations are taking proactive steps to create environments that nurture neurodiverse talent.

Exact numbers vary depending on the study, but approximately one in ten people can be identified as having a neurodiverse condition. However, there are still many challenges when it comes to supporting neurodiversity in the workplace, especially if managers or work colleagues are poorly informed of a neurodifference.

Many individuals still associate a neurodiverse condition with a level of stigma, making them often unwilling to engage in support, or are fearful if they disclose their condition it may negatively impact how they are perceived at work.

Similarly, many managers are unsure how to approach the subject with an employee, wondering that may be cause offense or say the ‘wrong thing’. As well as finding time in a managers or employees busy schedules, many neurodiversity services also come with potential waiting lists, costs an organisation may not be willing to cover, or have limited access outside of larger urban centres.

These kinds of challenges I know all too well, both as a dyslexic individual and as the Founder and CEO of a neurodiversity specialist consultancy. After completing my studies and becoming a Chartered Occupational Psychologist, in addition to spending several years working in the corporate sector, I established Lexxic in 2007 with the aim of empowering neurodiversity within the workplace.

Since then, we have grown to a team of psychologists that work with occupational health providers, HR professionals and government organisations to empower neurodiversity at work.

Why Online Learning?

After several years of delivering many face-to-face screening, diagnostic and workplace assessments, it became clear to us in person solutions were not going to be the right fit for everyone.

For example, many individuals wanted to learn at their own pace and in their own time, had busy schedules, or were frustrated when appointments were not immediately available to them. It often led them to browse the internet looking for neurodiversity resources – and while there are many helpful resources online – sometimes they would receive incorrect information, mixed messages, or they would disengage as they felt the content was poorly put together.

Similarly, we would run training workshops for managers in organisations to raise awareness, only for several of the participants to send apologies that ‘something came up’ and not attend. Frustrated HR managers felt they had invested their training budget yet weren’t reaching the full audience of managers that they needed to.

This led us to create Neurotalent Unlocked, which is an online learning platform which contains skills-based modules for employees and awareness raising modules for managers. Each module is delivered using engaging video-based content, based on real-life stories, that tell the journey of a neurodiverse individual or a manager who is supporting an individual with a neurodiverse condition at work.

Each module also illustrates practical skills and techniques to support individuals achieving success in the workplace and helps managers become aware of how they can support neurodiversity at work.

Evidence

Recently, we completed a study with a Leading UK Bank to review the effectiveness of the platform.

In order to do this, Lexxic assessed 62 staff members with neurodiverse conditions and recommended the relevant eLearning modules to them. While online learning will never replace the benefit of meeting with a psychologist face to face, it can still be used as a supportive and complimentary resource.

For example, 79% of staff reported an improvement in their writing skills following completion of the ‘Improve Your Writing’ module and 69% of staff reported an improvement in their abilities when completing the ‘Improving Your Reading’ module. As each module takes only one hour to complete, the time invested translates into immediate results for the individual and organisation.
